Seattle Neighborhood Spotlight: Phinney Ridge
Neighboring our previous spotlight subject, Greenwood, Phinney Ridge is located in north-central Seattle. Named after the north/south-running ridge that divides Ballard from Green Lake, Phinney Ridge is a spunky, fun, and charming little slice of the Seattle experience.
Established by a native of Nova Scotia, Guy Phinney, who originally developed a private area that later became Woodland Park Zoo, Phinney Ridge is a quiet community that enjoys its roots as a wooded, natural resource.
The center of the area is longtime neighborhood grocery store, Phinney Market. Try finding a chain supermarket that offers homemade food and meals at family tables. The rest of Phinney Ridge spirals out from there, with chic stores and restaurants that remain in the face of condo development. Pottery shops, delis, diners, bakeries, coffee shops, and even a doll store are within easy walking distance.
Some buildings in Phinney Ridge are over 100 years old and are still being used today. The Phinney Neighborhood Center, which hosts beer tastings, children’s programs, classes, karaoke, and volunteer programs, is located in the John B. Allen School, established in 1905.
As far as the real estate in Phinney Ridge goes, you’ll see modern condominiums along the high-density areas, Craftsman and Tudor style homes speckled among newer townhouses, and small apartment complexes. Common amenities are large, spacious windows, hardwood floors, updated kitchens, and finished basements – even in older homes!
Though there’s only one private school in Phinney Ridge, the neighborhood’s proximity to Ballard, Greenwood, Wallingford, and Fremont means there are plenty of options within a short bus ride. Easy access to Aurora Ave makes commutes easy without many cross-town ventures compared to more distant communities.
The small, neighborhood-centric population and distance from downtown makes Phinney Ridge the perfect place to raise children. A Saturday spent along Phinney Ave eating ice cream, exploring the community center, visiting the library, and a trip to the zoo are all within easy and safe reach.
